Hogg’s Hollow tragedy remembered

 Fifty years ago, on March 17, 1960, five Italian immigrant workers died in a tragic accident during construction of a tunnel at Hoggs Hollow five decades later, "workplace fatalities and accidents still occur, because  safety regulations only work when they are backed up by rigorous inspection and enforcement,” says Wayne Hanley, the National President of UFCW Canada.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination — March 21, 2010

It is sometimes hard to envision how racism can continue to plague us in our increasingly globalized world. One would think that on a planet where an African-American man governs the predominantly white United States, a Korean man leads the United Nations, and a black woman from the global South stands as the Governor General of Canada, issues of race would by now be historical facts reviewed by elementary teachers as ways in which people acted in the past, but are now viewed through the lens of “never again.”

Growth Summit shows organizing hasn’t yet peaked

The UFCW One Union One Voice program – established by delegates to the union’s sixth regular international convention in 2008 – took a big step forward last week in Toronto with the successful completion of the first-ever UFCW Canada Growth Summit, involving more than 160 UFCW Canada activists and officers from across the country.

Il est parfois difficile d’imaginer comment le racisme peut continuer à nous assaillir dans un monde de plus en plus interdépendant. On pourrait penser que dans un monde où un Afro-Américain gouverne des États-Unis essentiellement blancs, où un Coréen dirige l’Organisation des Nations Unies, et une femme noire venant des pays du Sud occupe le poste de gouverneur générale du Canada, les questions d’origines ethniques seraient désormais des faits historiques faisant l’objet de cours d’histoire que des enseignants au niveau primaire décriraient comme de vieilles attitudes n’ayant plus lieu, et qui seraient considérés avec l’optique du « plus jamais cela ».
