Canada’s best union wins esteemed Labour Media awards for leading communications

Montreal – May 15, 2014 – UFCW Canada earned a number of prestigious awards at this year’s Canadian Association of Labour Media (CALM) Awards in Montreal, Quebec, in recognition of the union's long-established role as a leading communicator within the Canadian labour movement.

UFCW Canada Local 1000A won the award for Best Photograph for its snapshot of members holding strong during a labour dispute at Regency Meats in Toronto, Ontario. This is the second year in a row that Local 1000A has won a CALM Award, as last year both the Local Union and UFCW Canada's National Office received the 2013 Breaking Barriers Award for successfully reflecting the union's diverse membership.

UFCW Canada's website, meanwhile, won this year’s CALM award for Best Content. The victory comes on the heels of UFCW Canada's back-to-back wins for best website content at the International Labor Communications Association's Labour Media Awards in 2012 and 2013.

Finally, UFCW Canada's National Office took home the Cliff Scotton Prize for "the best piece reflecting the history, traditions and, culture of the labour movement." The award was presented to UFCW Canada for its 100 Years of Solidarity CD – a ground-breaking collection of new and classic songs about the struggle for workers' rights and social justice.

“Congratulations to our communicators at Local 1000A and the National Office for demonstrating an award-winning level of dedication and expertise in connecting with Canadian workers,” says Paul Meinema, UFCW Canada's National President. “Effective communications, along with superior organizing and membership servicing, will be crucial to helping more Canadians join the union and achieve better working conditions moving forward,” Brother Meinema adds.
