S.A.M.E. Youth Tour Sweeps Ontario

Toronto – March 23, 2013 – The first week of the S.A.M.E. Tour 2013 across Ontario was a huge hit with thousands of students.  The tour was launched on March 18, and coincided with Migrant Worker Awareness Week. Continuing through the week, ten S.A.M.E. (Students Against Migrant Exploitation) youth volunteers hosted awareness-raising seminars, videos, musical performances, and in-classroom projects to engage students about the challenges and hardships faced by migrant workers in Canada.

New video contest to raise youth awareness about workplace rights

Ottawa – March 21, 2013 – UFCW Canada is promoting a new youth leadership initiative aimed at educating young Canadians about workplace health safety, employee rights, and fairness on the job. The contest is seeking original youth-made videos on how to work safe and smart on the job in order to prevent injuries and illnesses at work.

More LensCrafters employees join UFCW 1000A

Newmarket, Ont. – March 4, 2013 – Retail workers in Newmarket, Ontario have become the newest group of LensCrafters employees to vote “Yes!” to UFCW Canada Local 1000A. The recent victory led by the Newmarket workers comes on the momentum of other successful drives at LensCrafters locations in Markham, Burlington and Toronto, making the Newmarket location the fifth store to gain UFCW Canada representation and the full support of Canada’s leading voice for retail workers.

2012 BDM Scholarship Winner: Dominic Chartrand, Local 500

Montreal – February 25, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 500 president Antonio Filato proudly presented Dominic Chartrand – the son of Céline Dupuis, who works at the produce department at Super C in Lachute – with a $1,000 scholarship. Sister Dupuis has been working under Metro banners for 13 years.

Put S.A.M.E. journey on your map for Migrant Worker Awareness Week 2013!

St. Catharines, Ont. – February 22, 2013 – Get on board! S.A.M.E. (Students Against Migrant Exploitation) is about to embark on an historic journey – to engage students across Ontario to defend human rights and fight for migrant worker justice. The journey begins March 18, at Brock University in St. Catharines; the first of a series of S.A.M.E. events in support of Migrant Worker Awareness Week 2013.

The Student School launches first-ever S.A.M.E high-school chapter

Toronto – January 29, 2013 – More than 100 high school students from across the Toronto area recently joined with members of The Student School to celebrate the launch of the first-ever Students Against Migrant Exploitation (S.A.M.E) high-school chapter. The Student School is a Toronto alternative high school founded on social justice and participatory democracy principles.
