"The Prairie School once again proved to be a resounding success with registrations from across the Prairies exceeding capacity, " says UFCW Canada Local 1400 member Carol Cisecki, who along with three other Local 1400 sisters recently participated in the 2012 Prairie School for Union Women (PSUW) retreat for women labour activists held at Waskesiu Lake in northern Saskatchewan. More than 100 sisters from a number of unions attended.
Over 400 delegates from various unions across Manitoba recently came together in Winnipeg for the Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) convention. Delegates discussed resolutions and listened to speakers sharing their stories about the labour movement, politics and social issues.
"Politics" was a key word at the recently held 10th Biennale Women's Network Convention in Orlando, Florida. Like the UFCW Canada National Women's Advisory Council, the UFCW Women’s Network works to motivate and encourage women members to become more active in their union and their communities.
After a lifetime of social activism and civil rights advocacy, legendary organizer Dolores Huerta was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on May 29, one of the highest civilian honours awarded by the President of the United States.
The National Council Women’s Advisory Committee (NCWAC) recently met in Calgary to discuss a number of initiatives and issues, including women’s safety, both in and outside the workplace.
