Toronto – April 7, 2014 – Since 1948, World Health Day has been marked annually on April 7, to recognize the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO). The day provides an opportunity for people around the world to work for solutions to the health problems that affect our communities.
Guatemala City, Guatemala – April 4, 2014 – UFCW Canada and allies recently met with Guatemalan authorities to discuss the shortfalls of temporary foreign worker programs, and the impact of the programs on the human and labour rights of Guatemalan migrant workers.
Toronto – April 3, 2014 – When the Supreme Court of Canada handed down its landmark 1985 decision in the case Singh v. Minister of Employment and Immigration, Canada took a momentous leap forward in the developing legal areas of Constitutional law and refugee rights. In the Singh case, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that guarantees within the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and security applied to everyone in Canada – including refugees.
Victoria, B.C. – March 31, 2014 – The verdict by the B.C. Labour Relations Board (BCLRB) that Mexico had blacklisted Mexican migrant workers in British Columbia suspected of being union supporters rocked the B.C. legislature last week, as the opposition demanded action from Premier Christy Clarke to tell Mexico to stop the blacklisting.
Toronto – March 26, 2014 – UFCW Canada has just launched ufcw.ca/pride – a new website resource to support our union's proud and prominent role in the upcoming international Pride festivities in Toronto, to be held from June 20-29.
Toronto – March 19, 2014 – The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated annually on March 21 to commemorate the victims of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa and to denounce racism globally.
