With less than a week to go before Canada’s New Democrats elect a new leader,it is becoming increasingly apparent that the UFCW Canada endorsed candidate Thomas Mulcair has the greatest momentum as we gear up for the leadership convention, which will be held in Toronto from March 23 to 24.
Ever since Stephen Harper announced that his Conservative government is considering cuts to retirement security programs such as the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS), Canadians young and old have been following this issue with great interest.
The recently released Drummond Commission Report gave us another indication that a policy of austerity will be forced upon the working and middle class people of Ontario in the upcoming provincial budget.
The reckless actions of the Harper Tories in spying on Dr. Cindy Blackstock, child welfare advocate, the Executive Director of First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada (FNCFCS), and a UFCW Canada national community partner, is disturbingly reminiscent of Senator Joseph McCarthy who terrorized Americans with the Red Scare during the 1950s, and utilized that fear to create a chilling effect on those who advocated for basic decency and human rights.
Recently, UFCW Canada joined its community partner, KAIROS Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, in culminating its Roll with the Declaration campaign in Ottawa. More than 500 travellers, banner makers, indigenous elders, religious leaders, community activists and supporters gathered at Victoria Island on Algonquin territory (a.k.a. Ottawa, Ontario).
As Canadians appear to be headed to the polls early in May, perhaps now is the time to reflect on this Parliament, Canada’s 40th Parliament, and determine what needs to be done to prevent a repeat in the 41st Parliament.
