December 1st was Worlds AIDS day: a time when most politicians and countries commit to increasing their efforts in battling this deadly disease. For example in the United States, the Obama administration launched a new initiative called a “Creating an AIDS-free generation”.
The decision by Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland to remove Toronto Mayor Rob Ford from office – for violating Ontario’s Municipal Conflict of Interest laws – finally shows the people of Canada’s largest municipality that wealthy, well-connected politicians are not above the law and they can’t ignore it.
Federal by-elections have been called in the ridings of Calgary Centre, Durham, and Victoria for November 26, which means UFCW Canada members and their families have an opportunity to tell Stephen Harper's Conservative Government that Canadians want a Parliament that will stand up for working families.
It is one thing for Dalton McGuinty to announce that he is stepping down as Premier of Ontario igniting a leadership race in the Liberal party with the winner becoming the provinces new Premier. But why does he need to prorogue (shut down) the legislature until the new leader is elected?
With the resumption of Parliament, it became evident early in the first question period that the Harper government was on the attack again – this time trying to portray Tom Mulcair and the NDP as poor economic managers.
On September 5 voters in Quebec elected a new Parti Quebecois (PQ) minority government, and on September 6 the people of Ontario denied the Dalton McGuinty government a desired majority after voting against the Liberals in two by-elections.
