Workers, union activists and community members showed their support for Zellers staff at the Devonshire Mall Saturday, May 5, at the Support Zellers Workers Rally in Windsor, Ontario. The event received significant media attention, drawing over a hundred people who demanded fairness for the Zellers workers who will be losing their jobs once their stores are converted to Targets.
Hundreds of Windsor, Ontario residents, activists and long time Zellers customers will be heading to the city's largest shopping centre this May 5 weekend to Ask Target for Fairness. The rally is scheduled for 11 a.m., at Devonshire Mall.
Each year, millions of other workers across the globe celebrate May 1st, International Workers' Day (May Day) as their Labour Day.
Recently, the Students Against Migrant Exploitation (SAME) chapter at Brock University held one of their most successful events so far. The event, entitled "Game for SAME," was a video game tournament that sought to raise awareness of the plight of Migrant Workers among the St. Catharines community, as well as fundraise for the families who were affected by the tragic February 2012 accident that claimed the lives of ten migrant workers in Homestead, Ontario.
A group of UFCW Canada Local 401 members are now better prepared to make a greater impact in their communities after completing a week-long training session dedicated to helping yet-to-be unionized workers improve their lives through collective action.
