UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships recipients announced

Toronto – July 13, 2013 – The 20 recipients of the 2012 UFCW Canada Migrant Worker Scholarships have been announced. The recipients are a diverse group of young people from the Global South, ranging in age from 6 to 24 — attending school in Guatemala, the Philippines, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Kenya, El Salvador and Mexico. Each recipient was nominated by a family member working as a migrant or temporary foreign worker in Canada.

AWA wins 2013 CoDevelopment Canada "Solidarity Award"

Vancouver – July 10, 2013 – The Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) was recently recognized for its longstanding advocacy of migrant farm workers' labour rights at a fundraising dinner hosted by CoDevelopment Canada (CoDev), a British Columbia-based non-profit organization that works for social change and global education in the Americas.

S.A.M.E. activists bring migrant awareness to thousands of students

Toronto – June 21, 2013 - In many regards the 2012-2013 school year was an historic milestone for S.A.M.E. (Students Against Migrant Exploitation). Among the many accomplishments for the organization, now in its fourth year, was the total number of students that were engaged through presentations and online campaigns: more than 7,500 students altogether!

ufcw canada awa virgil welcome migrant workersVirgil, Ont. – June 7, 2013 - Hundreds of migrant agriculture workers and guests gathered at the Virgil Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) workers' support centre June 2, for the centre's Annual Opening Barbeque and Soccer Tournament. Each spring, the yearly gathering hosted by the AWA and UFCW Canada welcomes back migrant farm workers employed in southern Ontario's Niagara region.
