UFCW Canada joins allies to request IACHR hearing into violation of TFW labour rights

Mexico City – March 3, 2014 – UFCW Canada and other leaders from the migrant workers' rights movement have requested a Thematic Hearing at the 150th regular session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The hearing is requested to highlight the responsibility of states of origin in the violation of temporary workers' labour rights, specifically during the process of selection, recruitment, hiring, monitoring and return, when traveling to the U.S. or Canada on temporary work visas.

Human and labour rights of Mexicans absent from NAFTA Summit

Mexico City, Mexico – February 21, 2014 – The NAFTA Summit held in Toluca, Mexico on February 19 should have marked the beginning of a new dialogue between Mexico and Canada: a dialogue that fosters unconditional respect for the labour rights of all migrant workers.

Leaders' Summit opportune time for Harper to ask Mexico to stop the blacklisting

Toronto – January 27, 2014 – This year's North American Leaders' Summit in February coincides with the 20th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The venue for the summit is Mexico, which makes the timing opportune for Prime Minister Harper to end his government's silence in the face of overwhelming evidence which corroborates that Mexican government officials violated Canadian law, the human and labour rights of Mexican citizens working in Canada, as well as provisions of NAFTA.

Evidence pointing to Mexico blacklisting migrant workers in Canada stands, says BC Supreme Court

Vancouver – January 17, 2014 – The Supreme Court of British Columbia has denied a petition by Mexico to quash documentary evidence and testimony that corroborates that the Mexican government blacklisted Mexican migrant workers from returning to Canada because they were suspected of being union sympathizers. The evidence had been presented in 2012 to the BC Labour Relations Board by UFCW Canada Local 1518.

UFCW Canada brings support to Father Solalinde’s hostel

Ixtepec, Mexico – January 9, 2014 – Every day, the Brothers of the Road hostel opens its door to hundreds of migrants in transit through Ixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Migrant workers from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua arrive on The Beast as the local train is known — jumping off after a hard and gruelling 14-hour passage.
