FNCFCS brings First Nations child welfare case to the federal court of Canada

Together with the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), and the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC), the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada (FNCFCS), a UFCW Canada National Partner, has brought an historic child welfare case to the Federal Court of Canada.

UFCW Canada joins Calgary Memorial March

February 14, 2012 - UFCW Canada members and activists gathered with other community members for the Fourth Annual Calgary Valentine's Day Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women. The Calgary memorial was one of 12 such events held across Canada to honour and call attention to the 700 or more aboriginal women who have disappeared or been murdered over the past two decades, with the majority of the cases still unsolved.

Calgary, AB – 2012 is the fourth year that Calgarians will gather on Valentine's Day to honour the memories of women gone missing or murdered in Canada and to keep alive the hope that justice will be seen for these women and their families. Held at Scarboro United Church, the Calgary Valentine's Day Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women will begin at 6:30pm.

Harper Conservatives should address needs of Attawapiskat rather than spy on child welfare advocate

The reckless actions of the Harper Tories in spying on Dr. Cindy Blackstock, child welfare advocate, the Executive Director of First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada (FNCFCS), and a UFCW Canada national community partner, is disturbingly reminiscent of Senator Joseph McCarthy who terrorized Americans with the Red Scare during the 1950s, and utilized that fear to create a chilling effect on those who advocated for basic decency and human rights.

UFCW Canada ROLLS WITH THE DECLARATION to demand Harper Tories implement UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Recently, UFCW Canada joined its community partner, KAIROS Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, in culminating its Roll with the Declaration campaign in Ottawa.  More than 500 travellers, banner makers, indigenous elders, religious leaders, community activists and supporters gathered at Victoria Island on Algonquin territory (a.k.a. Ottawa, Ontario).
