Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico - January 16, 2012 — Migrant workers from the Mexican state of Oaxaca traveling to Canada will receive better protection this 2012 season after the signing of an agreement between the Instituto Oaxaqueno de Atencion a Migrantes (IOAM) and UFCW Canada.
The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), the Canadian Auto Workers' (CAW) union, the London and District Labour Council, and the Canadian Labour Congress have issued a call to workers across Ontario to mobilize for a massive rally in London on Saturday, January 21 to oppose Electro-Motive Canada (a subsidiary of U.S.-based Caterpillar Inc.) and its attack on decent paying jobs. The rally will begin at 11 a.m.
Every year, UFCW International awards one $8,000 scholarship to a Canadian member or their dependant. The recipient is chosen from dozens of applications received from across Canada. Shelby Guenette was recently presented with the prestigious International Scholarship by former Local Union 832 President Robert Ziegler. A Walkerton, Ontario trial, scheduled to last for three days has been set aside by a plea bargain, in a case involving the deaths of two Jamaican migrant workers who died after exposure to toxic fumes while working at an Ayton, Ontario farm.

2011 was a successful year for webCampus with new courses in both English and French launched almost every month, and a record number of subscribers enjoyed the freedom of studying at their own time and own pace at no cost. Since it was launched in 2009, webCampus has become a very popular life changing program – not just among UFCW Canada members but also their families and the union’s community allies.
Roughly two-thirds of retail shifts fall outside of traditional daycare hours, and many UFCW Canada members are forced to use unlicensed daycare centres or even call-in sick to take care of their children. In light of these alarming facts, the UFCW Canada National Women's Advisory Committee is undertaking several initiatives to help members with issues surrounding childcare.
