VANCOUVER, BC - November 14, 2011 – About a hundred community and labour activists gathered outside the Mexico Consulate in Vancouver on Monday with coffins, tombstones and crosses, along with a petition to "Stop the Blacklisting" of Mexico migrant workers in Canada by the Mexico government.
“The Galliford case is a powerful example of why all workers in Canada must have the right to bargain collectively,” says the National President of Canada’s largest private-sector union.
Canada’s largest private-sector union, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW Canada), has joined the growing number of Canadians who are speaking out against the repugnant workplace treatment of Mountie Catherine Galliford, who allegedly endured sexual harassment throughout 16 years of public service as a RCMP constable.
UFCW Canada is calling on all activists to support a new campaign launched by the International Union of Food Workers (IUF) that asks people around the globe to make a stand for labour rights against the world’s largest food company.
On April 29, 2011, the Supreme Court of Canada delivered a decision that "abandoned agriculture workers in Ontario in their fight for dignity and respect," said National President Hanley; moments after the highest court in the land upheld Ontario legislation that denies excludes agriculture workers in Ontario from collective bargaining rights.
UFCW Canada Local 832 recently unveiled an exciting new resource for members in the City of Brandon and the Westman area of Manitoba: a new Training Centre and Union Office.
A majority of the 2,500 workers at National Beef’s Dodge City, Kansas, beef slaughter and processing facility voted to join UFCW District Local 2, in an election conducted by the U.S. National Labor Relations Board, on Thursday and Friday, November 3 and 4, 2011.
Workers at European Quality Meats and Sausages in the Greater Toronto Area are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 175. The 55 new members recently voted to certify and join Canada’s largest private-sector union.
More than 300 activists, allies, and UFCW Canada and AWA staff and officers recently gathered in Toronto for the 12th Annual César E. Chávez Black Eagle Awards. The Awards honour long time activists who have carried on the legacy of César Chávez by advancing the cause of justice for agriculture workers.
