Ottawa – May 7, 2013 – On average, women in Canada earn 32 percent less than men. That means that on average, a woman makes only 68 cents for every dollar a man makes. It varies by province. For instance, in Ontario it’s 28 per cent.
Toronto – May 6, 2013 – The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is at it again: blaming workers for everything that is wrong with government and the economy while giving Government Boss Stephen Harper and his Conservatives a free pass.
Ottawa – May 6, 2013 – According to a recent report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), worldwide unemployment will increase by 5.1 million this year – for a total of 202 million people around the globe who are unemployed.
Quebec – May 4, 2013 – Retail food members at the Provigo store in Windsor, Quebec, are now enjoying the benefits of a new collective agreement in their workplace. The retail food workers at this store voted 86% in favour of the agreement in principle reached by their bargaining committee. The new labour contract between UFCW Canada Local 500 and the employer is to expire in April 2019.
Toronto – May 3, 2013 – Canada’s leading voice for retail workers, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW Canada), is offering its condolences to the families of the garment workers who were recently killed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and partnering with Loblaw Companies Limited to lead the effort for a higher standard of scrutiny, accountability and health and safety protections in the global garment industry.

In 2012, the world’s super-rich saw their net worth skyrocket by 16% – at a time when all major wealth indicators (GDP, currency, equity and combined wealth) were down, according to the 2013 World Ultra Wealth Report Outlook.
Toronto – May 1, 2013 – While the wealthiest people on the planet are getting even richer, the rest of us are struggling to get by with less. But unions are an effective way to reduce the growing income gap between workers and the super-rich. This May Day, we can fight against global greed by standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world and recognizing that a strong, international labour movement is more important than ever.
