Juan Ariza, Hampstead Survivor, should have the Right to Stay in Canada

Toronto – January 31, 2013 – On February 6, 2012, a horrific collision near Hampstead, Ontario killed eleven men, and left three others critically injured. Juan Ariza, 35, was one of those survivors. The Peruvian native had only been in Canada three days when the Hampstead tragedy changed his life forever. He had been recruited to Canada as a migrant agriculture worker.  Ever since the tragic collision, Juan has been recuperating in a nursing home in London, Ontario.

The Hampstead Tragedy - BACKGROUND

On February 6, 2012, near Hampstead, Ontario, a flatbed truck collided with a passenger van carrying thirteen migrant agriculture workers. Ten of the passengers in the van were killed: David Armando Blancas-Hernandez, Elvio Bravo-Suncion, Enrique Arturo Leon, Juan Castillo, Fernando Correa, Jose Mercedes Valdiviezo-Taboa, Cesar Augusto Sanchez-Palacios, Corsino Jaramillo, Mario Abril, and Oscar Compomanes-Corzo.

The Student School launches first-ever S.A.M.E high-school chapter

Toronto – January 29, 2013 – More than 100 high school students from across the Toronto area recently joined with members of The Student School to celebrate the launch of the first-ever Students Against Migrant Exploitation (S.A.M.E) high-school chapter. The Student School is a Toronto alternative high school founded on social justice and participatory democracy principles.

LensCrafters workers in Markham, Ontario vote “Yes!” to UFCW Canada Local 1000A

Markham, Ont. – January 28, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 1000A recently welcomed a new group of LensCrafters workers to the union after they voted a resounding “Yes!” to UFCW Canada. LensCrafters is one of Canada’s largest eyewear retailers, and the new Local 1000A members work at the company’s location in Markham, Ontario at the Markville Shopping Centre.

Surrey, B.C. – January 26, 2013 – Andre Cortes is one of 18 Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu (BDM) Scholarships winners for 2012. Andre is the son of UFCW Canada Local 247 member Gladys Moreno who works at the Real Canadian Superstore in Delta, British Columbia.
