Kelowna, B.C. – November 10, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 1518 members employed at Fernbrae Manor in Kelowna have voted overwhelmingly in favour of accepting terms for a new three-year contract with the employer.
Toronto – November 9, 2013 – A youth leader from Toronto is the first recipient of the Wayne Hanley Award: recently established by the UFCW Local 1993 membership to recognize outstanding displays of youth leadership and achievement.
Barrie, Ont. – November 8, 2013 – Local 175 member Nicholas Chun, from Barrie, Ontario, has won the UFCW’s prestigious international scholarship – totalling $8,000. The UFCW International Scholarship is awarded annually to eight UFCW members or their dependents across North America.
Ottawa – November 7, 2013 – On November 11, 1918 at 11 a.m., the First World War drew to a close with the signing of an armistice agreement that brought an end to the hostilities.
Toronto – November 7, 2013 – Over 300 farm workers, community allies and UFCW Canada activists gathered in Toronto last night for The Annual UFCW Canada – AWA Awards Dinner, dedicated to recognizing the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations who advocate on behalf of agriculture workers and their rights.
Ottawa – November 6, 2013 – The Harper government has now proposed to substantially weaken the health and safety protections for workers employed in federally regulated industries and workplaces. The proposals are a matter of life and death and would leave federal workers faced with employer reprisal for refusing to do dangerous work.
Quebec City – November 5, 2013 – Food processing workers recently won a new union contract at the Fromagerie Albert Perron inc. cheese factory in Quebec City. The new three-year collective agreement between the employer and UFCW Canada Local 509 will be in force until June 18, 2016.
Toronto – November 4, 2013 – UFCW Canada's Facebook page has broken the million mark again, making it by far the most visited and visible Facebook page of any labor union in Canada (facebook.com/ufcwcanada). In October, UFCW Canada's Facebook efforts earned more than 1.3 million views, as the digital reach of Canada's leading and most progressive union continues to grow.
