Toronto – January 11, 2014 – UFCW Canada is excited to unveil a new platform and course for the ground-breaking online education program, webCampus, which offers free online courses to UFCW Canada members and their families.
Toronto – January 10, 2014 – On Sunday, January 5, approximately 160 members of UFCW Canada Local 175 at Horizon Plastics Intl. in Cobourg were locked out by their employer after they rejected a tentative settlement. The members rejected the deal due to the nature of several concessions in the document.
Montreal – January 9, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 1991P members at the ATRAHAN pork packing and processing plant have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract. About 250 members work at the plant located in the Mauricie region of Quebec.
Ixtepec, Mexico – January 9, 2014 – Every day, the Brothers of the Road hostel opens its door to hundreds of migrants in transit through Ixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Migrant workers from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua arrive on The Beast as the local train is known — jumping off after a hard and gruelling 14-hour passage.
Ottawa – January 8, 2014 – According to an annual review by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), by noon on Jan. 2, the average top paid Canadian CEO will have been earned as much as the average full-time worker's yearly income.
Ottawa – January 7, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 175 members at Wallack’s Art Shop & Gallery in Ottawa have achieved a first collective agreement. The new members ratified the one-year deal in December. The contract, in addition to standard collective agreement language, also includes wage and other improvements.
Vancouver – January 6, 2014 – UFCW and other members of a fact-finding commission have released a report slamming IKEA's "radical anti-worker agenda that opposes unionization campaigns and encourages union decertification."
Winnipeg – January 6, 2014 – Arsen Busel is one of eighteen UFCW Canada Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu (BDM) Scholarship winners for 2013.
