Robert Ziegler honoured with Stanley Knowles Solidarity Award
Robert Ziegler, the recently retired president of UFCW Canada Local 832 has been honoured as the 2012 recipient of the Stanley Knowles Solidarity Award. The award is presented at each convention of the Manitoba NDP to a trade unionist who has shown a deep commitment to working people and social justice.

When Stephen Harper announced that his government would be raising the eligibility age for Old Age Security (OAS) from 65 to 67, it was judged, except in conservative circles, as being unnecessary. The Parliamentary Budget Officer, the federal and provincial finance ministers’ Research Working Group, and numerous economists have all agreed Canada’s retirement system is sustainable and there is no need to raise the OAS eligibility age.
UFCW Canada’s Youth Internship Program (YIP) recently launched a “Farm Workers Feed Communities” summer course in Leamington, Ontario. The program was met with great success as the youth organized and led a series of outreach initiatives including a community barbeque that celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) support centre in Leamington. It was the students’ enthusiasm and hard work that attracted over 1000 local agriculture workers and community members to the event.
