2011 was a successful year for webCampus with new courses in both English and French launched almost every month, and a record number of subscribers enjoyed the freedom of studying at their own time and own pace at no cost. Since it was launched in 2009, webCampus has become a very popular life changing program – not just among UFCW Canada members but also their families and the union’s community allies.
Roughly two-thirds of retail shifts fall outside of traditional daycare hours, and many UFCW Canada members are forced to use unlicensed daycare centres or even call-in sick to take care of their children. In light of these alarming facts, the UFCW Canada National Women's Advisory Committee is undertaking several initiatives to help members with issues surrounding childcare.
Canadians is considered poor
Recently more than 40 UFCW Canada members from Local Unions in the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) gathered at the Halifax Common and walked with 1,300 participants in the first annual Light the Night Walk, which raises funds in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
Recently 30 UFCW Canada activists from across the country attended the Egale (Equality For Gays and Lesbians Everywhere) "Speak Easy: Stand Out, Speak Up" annual gala in Toronto along with 350 other supporters from diverse organizations and backgrounds.
Like most working people, UFCW Canada members throughout the country have shown a burgeoning interest on who the New Democratic Party will choose as the Leader to succeed Jack Layton, and the National Council of UFCW Canada is being proactive to ensure that the next federal NDP leader will continue to represent the interests of UFCW Canada members and workers throughout the Canada.
UFCW Canada Local Union 503 recently won a major victory for workers at Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu in the Charlevoix Region of Quebec, after the Supreme Court of Canada refused to grant the company permission to appeal a provincial court decision that upheld an arbitrator's awarding of unpaid tips to the hotel's unionized staff. The court's refusal marks the end of a long and strenuous legal battle that began in August 2005.
