An October 17 media conference outside of Vancouver's Mexico Consulate drew dozens of UFCW Canada and AWA activists along with community allies — all calling for Mexico to stop hiding behind diplomatic immunity and face the charges that agencies of the Mexico government, as well as its Vancouver consulate, conspired with two agriculture operations in the Lower Mainland to blacklist migrant agricultural workers from returning to Canada because they were union sympathizers.
UFCW Canada Local 1869's recent 8th Anniversary Picnic was a huge success, with this year's event attracting its largest turnout ever. More than 900 Local 1869 members enjoyed this year's festivities, and at the same time shared their goodwill with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) and with Winnipeg Harvest food bank.
The honourees for the 12th Annual César Chávez Black Eagle Awards have been announced. The César Chávez Black Eagle Awards — presented by UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) — recognize exceptional activists for their innovative social justice work on behalf of Canada's agriculture workers.
The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) has certified a single UFCW Canada bargaining unit covering Public Storage workers at 19 locations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
UFCW Canada and the AWA recently participated in an outreach program and Health Fair to improve and increase access to health care services for Asian temporary foreign agriculture workers in Ontario, as part of the Asian Migrant Farm Workers’ Health Promotion Project.
UFCW Canada has been honoured with four awards from the International Labor Communications Association (ILCA) — including the top award for overall best labour website in North America.
