Since getting involved as a Shop Steward with UFCW, I have taken many in-class courses through my Local, and online with webCampus.
Activists from UFCW Canada Local 832 joined other members of the Winnipeg community to kick off the 2012 United Way campaign by pulling a plane. The plane pull has become an annual tradition in Winnipeg, with this year’s event representing the 9th time Winnipeggers have gathered at the airport to flex their muscles for a worthy cause.
What is Wellbeing? – The presence of the highest possible quality of life in its full breadth of expression, focused on but not necessarily exclusive to: good living standards, robust health, a sustainable environment, vital communities, an educated populace, balanced time use, high levels of democratic participation, and access to and participation in leisure and culture. Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico — Linda Marlene Alvarez Mendez, widow of Crisanto Jimenez Gomez, has received a $2,500 insurance benefit following the accidental death of her husband earlier this year in Canada. As a member of the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA), Mr. Gomez was automatically covered by a no-cost accidental death policy issued by the American Income Life Insurance (AILI) company — the result of an historical agreement reached between AILI and UFCW Canada in September 2011.
In most developing countries, agriculture is still the most important source of employment for women in rural areas. Women are more likely than men to earn low-wages, to work part-time and seasonally, and they tend to be paid less than their male counterparts.
UFCW Canada and Mexico institution CONOFAM have signed a new agreement to protect the labour rights of Mexican migrant workers in Canada. CONOFAM (the National Coordinator of State Agencies for Migrant Affairs) provides migrant information and advocacy services throughout 29 of Mexico states, including the Federal District of Mexico.
Over 350 social services workers in Toronto recently voted for strength at work in the community by saying “Yes!” to UFCW Canada.
