The deadline for this year’s CALM Awards submissions is rapidly approaching.
The CALM Awards are open to all members and associate members of the Canadian Association of Labour Media, and Local Unions are invited to submit their best print and electronic publications from last year to CALM before March 31, 2012.
Walmart Associates from across the United States are coming together to call on Walmart to be a better employer. These brave workers have formed the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart). OUR Walmart's Declaration for Respect calls on Walmart to pay a family-sustaining wage; recognize their freedom of association; and ultimately show them respect.
UFCW Canada Local 1400 recently hosted a luncheon at its Education Centre in Saskatoon to introduce local union activists to New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership candidate Thomas Mulcair, who was officially endorsed by the union earlier this year.

On March 6, 2012, New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership candidate Thomas Mulcair met with UFCW Canada activists and members of the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) at the Quality Suites hotel in Toronto, Ontario. All four unions have formally endorsed Mr. Mulcair's campaign for the NDP leadership.
While she did not live to see it, Shannen Koostachin's dream of safe and decent schools for First Nations students has moved closer to reality after a unanimous vote on February 27 by the House of Commons calling on the government to provide increased funding to reserve schools to bring them up to the same standards as publicly funded schools in the provincial system.

Recently in Jasper, Alberta, the Equinox educational conference for Alberta women trade unionists celebrated its tenth anniversary. This year's conference — Working Women: Connecting with our Communities— was sponsored by the women's committees of the Alberta Federation of Labour and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).
