Toronto, ON - September 17, 2012 — UFCW Canada, Canada's leading union and long-time advocate for migrant workers' rights, endorses the recommendations and agrees with the findings of a new report from the Metcalf Foundation that lays out how current government policy is inadequate in preventing the exploitation and human rights violations of migrant workers in Canada.
On September 5 voters in Quebec elected a new Parti Quebecois (PQ) minority government, and on September 6 the people of Ontario denied the Dalton McGuinty government a desired majority after voting against the Liberals in two by-elections.
A new group of workers are the newest members of the UFCW Canada family after recently voting to join Local 1518. The new members work for Tojalomi Enterprises Ltd., a retail food store, gas station, and cafe located in Fort Fraser, B.C. In a vote conducted on September 10th, the workers proudly said “Yes!” to UFCW Canada.

$32 million Settlement Ends 12-year Legal Battle to Get Paid for Hours Worked(Washington, D.C.) – After a 12 year legal struggle, more than 12,000 Tyson poultry workers in 41 plants in 12 states will receive their payments from the largest settlement against a major poultry company at $32 million. Thanks to the tenacity and dedication of thousands of workers from across the country and the support of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, workers involved in the suit will receive payments averaging $1,200 in lost wages.
A new campaign called “Were You Asked?” is putting the spotlight on Brad Wall’s reckless agenda for Saskatchewan. The campaign is rallying communities across Saskatchewan to make a stand for fairness and public services by organizing province-wide public meetings, and by inviting everyone to share their concerns online at wereyouasked.ca.

Canada’s leading union is questioning why a foundation that trumpets “freedom, democracy and human rights” as “fundamental values” has chosen Stephen Harper as their pick for the 2012 World Statesman of the Year. The Award, doled out annually, is the creation of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, an American group started in 1965 as an “interfaith coalition of business and religious leaders that promotes peace, tolerance and ethnic conflict resolution.”
