Profiles of the nominators for the 2011 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships

In 2010, UFCW Canada created the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships to provide financial assistance to migrant workers’ children in sending countries, as a means to pursue their studies, and to fulfill the dreams that began when their fathers or mothers made the decision to migrate to Canada in order to improve their families’ lives.

Organizing win for North Country Catering workers, proud to join Local 401

A group of hospitality workers in the Alberta oil sands region are celebrating after winning a long-fought battle to become the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 401. Applying for certification to join the union over a year ago, the newest Local 401 members, who work for North Country Catering (NCC), kept strong while the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) took many months to dismiss a company challenge.

By the Numbers: 6 Walmart heirs have as much wealth as 42% of Americans combined

New numbers show that just 6 members of the Walton family – who collectively own over 48% of Walmart – have as much wealth as 42% of all Americans. These numbers make it more apparent than ever that the Waltons can certainly afford to pay their workers a living wage.

Target and Walmart show the “same disregard” for Quebec and its workers, says Canada’s leading retail union

MONTREAL – The leading retail workers’ union in Quebec, and all across Canada, is taking Walmart to task for reneging on an important promise it repeatedly made to Zellers workers at Les Galeries Quatre Saisons in Sherbrooke, QC.

Local 1993 “Summer Splash” kicks off Caribana Season for UFCW Canada activists and families

Over 200 UFCW Canada activists, families and community partners gathered in Toronto on July 21 to fundraise for sickle cell research and bring in the annual Caribana season with an energetic night of music, dancing, door prizes and delicious West Indian food.

Local 1518 certifies fruit packing plant in Cawston, B.C.

The British Columbia Labour Board recently issued a remedial certification for workers at Cawston Cold Storage in Cawston, B.C. In its decision, the B.C. Labour Board ruled that UFCW Canada Local 1518 had strong worker support for the campaign, and that the employer interfered with the organizing drive in such a way that it met the test to issue a remedial certification.

UFCW Canada/ AWA Quebec victory for Guatemalan migrant workers

Thanks to the efforts of UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA), Guatemalan migrant agriculture workers across Quebec will share in a $250,000 settlement. The settlement comes in the wake of complaints filed by the AWA St-Remi Support Centre in 2009 and 2010 with the Quebec Labour Standards Board, originally on behalf of 40 Guatemalan migrant workers at a Quebec agriculture operation whose housing deductions exceeded the provincial maximum of $20 a week.

UFCW Canada Locals in Alberta show their support for Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair

Members and staff of UFCW Canada Locals 401 and 1118 joined NDP members and political activists from across Alberta to welcome Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair to Calgary on July 12th. Over 200 people came out to meet the new leader at a Calgary Stampede barbeque hosted by Alberta NDP MLA David Eggen, who represents the provincial riding of Edmonton-Calder.
