National President meets Local 1118 Executive Board in Red Deer

Paul Magee, 1951 – 2013

Toronto – February 20, 2013 – Husband, father, grandfather, son and UFCW Canada brother Paul Magee passed away on February 17, 2013 in Toronto, after a courageous battle with lymphoma. Brother Magee was born in Toronto, March 18, 1951 to Gilda Magee (Mulholland) and the late Robert Magee. He was a loving husband to Teresa Magee, and a loving father to his three cherished children; Dustin, Casey and Sabrina.

2012 BDM Scholarship Winner: Jacqueline Kerr, Local 206

Sarnia, Ont. – February 20, 2013 – Jacqueline Kerr is one of the 18 BDM Scholarships recipients for 2012. Jacqueline is the daughter of UFCW Canada Local 206 Member Nelly Pittao (pictured with Local 206 representative Cliff Kostyniuk) who works at Swiss Chalet in London, Ontario.

Devon Jack Fish workers vote Yes! to UFCW Canada Local 401

Conklin, Alta. – February 17, 2013 – Lodge workers at Devon Jack Fish in Northern Alberta are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 401 following a winning unionization campaign last month. The union was certified as the official bargaining agent for all Devon Jack Fish operations in Conklin, Alberta – a small oil sands community two hours south of Fort McMurray – after workers voted unanimously in favour of joining the union.

UFCW Canada activists join Calgary Memorial March

Calgary – February 14, 2013 – UFCW Canada members and activists joined more than 200 community members in Calgary for the Fifth Annual Memorial March for Murdered and Missing Women. The Calgary march is one of many memorials held across the country every February 14, to honour and remember the more than 700 Indigenous women across Canada who have died over the last two decades as a result of violence, or whose disappearance remains unsolved.

Nexen Aramark workers in Alberta oil sands region vote “Yes!” to Local 401

Fort McMurray, Abta. – February 14, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 401 recently welcomed a new group of hospitality and food services workers to the union after they voted “Yes!” to joining Alberta’s leading voice for workers. The new members work for Aramark at the company’s Nexen Long Lake facility, a remote site services operation that caters to the lodging needs of the province’s oil sands industry.

Tim Hudak’s education agenda attacks low and middle-income families

Toronto – February 13, 2013 – Many UFCW Canada members and families struggle to keep up with student loan payments. Now Ontario Conservative Boss Tim Hudak wants to make it even harder. Another Ontario Conservative white paper called “Paths to Prosperity: Higher Learning for Better Jobs,” says that financial aid for students should be tied to how well students do in their courses. The paper also recommends different streams of education based on students’ ability to pay.
