Calgary – May 14, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 401 is proud to announce that Excel Resources Society employees working at the Gerard Raymond Centre (GRC) and John McGee Employment Options Centre (JMEO) in Edmonton have become the newest members of Local 401.
Montreal – May 13, 2014 – Roxanne Deschamps is one of eighteen UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship winners for 2013. Sister Deschamps is currently enrolled in the Fine Arts Program at Cégep de St-Hyacinthe in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, where she is specializing in Visual and Media Arts.
Toronto – May 12, 2014 – Juan Ariza is not only a survivor – he is a fighter. On February 6, 2012, he and two other migrant workers survived a horrific traffic accident near Hampstead, Ontario, when the van they were travelling in collided with another vehicle. Ten of Juan's colleagues were killed, along with the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident.
Ottawa – May 10, 2014 – Workers at Healthcare Food Services (HFS) in Ottawa, Ontario are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 175 after voting to join the union earlier this year.
Montreal – May 9, 2014 – UFCW Canada was a leading force at the 2014 Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Convention, where over 4,800 trade unionists – including 400 UFCW Canada activists – came from across the country to gather in Montreal, Quebec for the Congress’s triennial conference.
Toronto – May 9, 2014 – The Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario (ACBO) has released a report supporting the call for equitable access for agriculture workers to the same labour rights and workplace benefits as other workers in Ontario.
Montreal – May 8, 2014 – UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema joined representatives from Bangladeshi and international unions and various non-profit organizations at the 27th Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Convention to discuss the labour movement's critical role in prompting corporate accountability for garment worker safetyin the aftermath of the Rana Plaza factory collapselast spring.
Montreal - May 7, 2014 - Fairness was at the centre of Day 2 of the CLC 27th Constitutional Convention. Tuesday morning, the focus was on the Together Fairness Campaign and how it has done so far how to promote fairness, to counter the attack on labour rights by ultra-conservative politicians and corporate elites.
