UFCW stands in solidarity with workers at Rana Plaza first anniversary demonstration

Dhaka, Bangladesh – April 24, 2014 – On the one-year anniversary of the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh that claimed 1,135 lives, tens of thousands of Bangladeshi garment workers took to the streets of Dhaka, joined by trade unions from Canada.

Caisses Desjardins workers join the union, UFCW 501

Montreal – April 24, 2014 – Caisse Desjardins (a credit union) de l’Est de l’Abitibi (‘‘Eastern Abitibi Region’’) employees working at service branches in Senneterre, Barraute, Landrienne, La Corne, Vassan and Saint-Marc-de-Figuery, have chosen to join UFCW Canada Local 501.

UFCW activists build solidarity at Saskatchewan Provincial Council

Saskatoon – ­­April 24, 2014 – Members, activists and leaders from Locals 248P, 649 and 1400 recently came together for the annual meeting of UFCW Canada’s Saskatchewan Provincial Council. Delegates focused on sharing ideas and building strategy to best protect Saskatchewan’s working people in the face of increasing attacks on labour by federal and provincial ruling parties.

2013 UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship Winner: Annick Langevin Cossette, Local 503

Quebec City – April 24, 2014 – Annick Lagevin Cossette is one of eighteen UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship winners for 2013. Sister Cossette is currently enrolled full-time in the Biomedical Technologies Program at Collège Shawinigan in Shawinigan, Quebec.

One year after Rana Plaza tragedy, UFCW Canada embarks on fact-finding mission to Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh – April 23, 2014 – One year after the horrific Rana Plaza factory collapse that claimed hundreds of lives in the Greater Dhaka Area of Bangladesh, UFCW Canada is traveling to Dhaka to meet with trade unionists, health and safety experts, and survivors of the Rana Plaza tragedy to express solidarity with the building collapse victims and demand better health and safety protections for textile workers everywhere.

S.A.M.E. tour a tremendous success raising awareness of migrant issues

Toronto – ­­April 22, 2014 – Students Against Migrant Exploitation (S.A.M.E.) recently concluded their 2014 tour in support of Migrant Worker Awareness Month. Conducting workshops at more than 70 colleges, universities, elementary schools and community centres, S.A.M.E. activists directly engaged more than 15,000 students across Ontario and Quebec.
