Members at LensCrafters achieve first contract — UFCW 1000A
Toronto – July 15, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 1000A members at LensCrafters locations in the Toronto-area have strongly voted in favour of ratifying their first union collective agreement with the retailer.
Members at Lucyporc achieve new contract – UFCW 1991P
Montreal – July 14, 2014 – Members working at Lucyporc — a business specializing in hog farming and slaughtering as well as pork processing — have achieved a new collective agreement. About 280 UFCW Canada Local 1991P members work at the facility in the areas of slaughtering, meat cutting and meat packing. The contract runs until October 2019.
Canada’s leading union for agriculture workers welcomes end to sugar strike in Swaziland
Toronto – July 12, 2014 – UFCW Canada congratulates the members of the Swaziland Agriculture and Plantation Workers Union (SAPWU) on the settlement they achieved following a three-week strike. More than 3,000 workers demonstrated immense courage throughout the duration of the strike, standing up to intimidation by the military and legal action by the company.
UFCW Canada helps launch Jack Layton School for Youth Leadership
Toronto – July 11, 2014 – With the sponsorship of Canada’s leading union for young workers, Ryerson University has launched the first-ever Jack Layton School for Youth Leadership. UFCW Canada activists participated in the intensive leadership development program, which draws students aged 18 to 29 from unions, community groups and social justice organizations.
UFCW Canada calls on Mexican government to stop gender-based discrimination against migrant agriculture workers
Mexico City – July 10, 2014 – Canada’s leading union for migrant workers has filed a formal complaint with the Mexican Human Rights Commission on behalf of women agriculture workers. UFCW Canada (United Food and Commercial Workers union) has asked the Commission to send an immediate recommendation to the Mexican government to prohibit employers in Canada from using gender criteria in the selection process of migrant agriculture workers.
NDF 28th Convention builds strength, solidarity and fairness
Vancouver – July 9, 2014 – UFCW Canada activists from across Canada gathered in Vancouver, June 6 to 8, at the 28th Annual National Defence Fund (NDF) Convention to build strength, fairness, and solidarity.
Harper vs. the Courts
Toronto – July 9, 2014 – Under a majority government, opposition parties are limited in what they can do to stop the government’s agenda. They can filibuster, try amending legislation, put forth private member's bills, and question the government in the House of Commons and Senate, and at committee. But in the end, the majority government controls the agenda and with an unprecedented use of time allocation to limit debate, Harper’s Conservatives have bullied through with their agenda.
