Target misguided shareholders about Canadian experiment

Toronto – September 24, 2014 – To date, American retail giant Target has reported a loss of almost $1.6 billion from its train wreck of an expansion into Canada. Ignoring the advice of industry pundits and retail experts, Target opened 124 new stores in Canada at break-neck speed, refusing to honour the jobs of more than 20,000 former Zellers workers in the process.

Migrant Workers Scholarships nominator profile: Olga Antipova

Toronto – September 23, 2014 – Olga Antipova is 29-years-old and works at Maple Leaf Foods in Brandon, Manitoba. She is a member of UFCW Canada Local 832. In 2011, Olga decided to come to Canada from her native Russia to learn English at a college or university. Olga holds degrees in business administration from post-secondary institutions in Russia.

Quinte Humane Society workers join the union – UFCW 175

Mississauga, Ont. – September 20, 2014 – Workers at the Quinte Humane Society in Belleville, Ontario voted unanimously in favour of joining UFCW Canada Local 175, at a certification vote held earlier this month.

UFCW Canada calls on Harper to prevent another tragedy in Bangladesh

Toronto – September 19, 2014 – Canada’s most progressive union is urging the Harper government to commit to supporting safe working conditions in Bangladesh’s garment sector. UFCW Canada activists are sending letters to the government demanding action to stop another tragedy like Rana Plaza, in which 1,135 garment workers were killed and more than 2,500 were injured when their factory collapsed more than a year ago.
