Ottawa – January 7, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 175 members at Wallack’s Art Shop & Gallery in Ottawa have achieved a first collective agreement. The new members ratified the one-year deal in December. The contract, in addition to standard collective agreement language, also includes wage and other improvements.
Montreal – January 9, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 1991P members at the ATRAHAN pork packing and processing plant have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract. About 250 members work at the plant located in the Mauricie region of Quebec.
Ixtepec, Mexico – January 9, 2014 – Every day, the Brothers of the Road hostel opens its door to hundreds of migrants in transit through Ixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Migrant workers from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua arrive on The Beast as the local train is known — jumping off after a hard and gruelling 14-hour passage.
