Migrant workers from the Mexican State of Guerrero will benefit from a broader network of protection and assistance when arriving to Canada thanks to a new agreement between UFCW Canada and the government of Guerrero.
After nearly five months of hard negotiations, one of Local 401’s newest bargaining units has secured a first contract that sets a new standard for service workers in Alberta’s booming oil sands.
Every year, UFCW International awards one $8,000 scholarship to a Canadian member or their dependant. The recipient is chosen from dozens of applications received from across Canada. Shelby Guenette was recently presented with the prestigious International Scholarship by former Local Union 832 President Robert Ziegler. Shelby works at Safeway 719 and is currently attending the University of Winnipeg where she is completing a Bachelor of Science and an undergraduate degree in Education.
The Students Against Migrant Exploitation (SAME) chapter at Brock University in southern Ontario recently organized an event that mobilized a large group of students to sign a petition against farm worker exploitation.
