Toronto – July 17, 2014 – Canada’s most progressive union kicked off the 2014 Caribana season with the UFCW Canada Summer Splash on July 12. More than 250 members, friends, family, activists, and supporters joined together for an evening of music, dancing, and fundraising, including activists from UFCW Canada and UFCW Canada Local Unions 175 & 633, 206, 1000A, and 12R24.

In what has become a noble tradition, all money raised at the event, as well as UFCW Canada’s other Caribana activities, is donated to Faces of Our Children, an organization dedicated to sickle cell research. As the adopted charity of the UFCW International Minority Coalition, sickle cell research is particularly important to Caribbean communities in Canada, the United States and around the world.

The Summer Splash is also an opportunity to preview some of the most stunningly beautiful and creative costumes for the annual Caribana parade. Every year, UFCW Canada participates in Toronto’s Caribana in a big way. The high point of the season is the huge parade along Toronto’s waterfront, where UFCW Canada activists march and dance with the multi-award winning Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club. As a Mas band which has captured the Band of the Year award no less than 16 times, the Mas-K Club is a long-time community partner with UFCW Canada.

This year’s Toronto Caribana parade is on August 2 and starts at Exhibition Place on Lakeshore Boulevard. Come join the fun and jump up with UFCW Canada!
