Caisses Desjardins workers join the union, UFCW 501

Caisses Desjardins workers join the union, UFCW 501Montreal – April 24, 2014 – Caisse Desjardins (a credit union) de l’Est de l’Abitibi (‘‘Eastern Abitibi Region’’) employees working at service branches in Senneterre, Barraute, Landrienne, La Corne, Vassan and Saint-Marc-de-Figuery, have chosen to join UFCW Canada Local 501. The more than forty new members are in addition to other Local 501 members at three other Caisse Desjardins de l’Est de l’Abitibi service branches located in Val-d’Or, Lemoyne and Malartic, as well as Local 501 members working at Amos’s Caisse Desjardins service branches in Amos, Christ-Roi, Saint-Félix-de-Dalquier and Saint-Mathieu-d’Harricana, in the western part of the Abitibi Region.

Including the newest members, UFCW Canada Local 501 now represent about 160 workers at Caisses Desjardins in the Abitibi Region. Their voice are added to that of 45,000 UFCW Canada members in Quebec and 250,000 members across the country. This way, they ensure that their demands will be supported by the leading food and commercial workers’ union in Quebec and Canada.

‘‘We are very proud to grow our representation of Caisses Desjardins employees in the Abitibi Region with this new certification. UFCW Canada Local 501 is happy to provide assistance and support, and we, along with these new members, will honour our commitment’’, says UFCW Canada Local 501 President Alain Lachaîne.
