New poster available for celebrating Earth Day on April 22
Toronto – April 21, 2014 – As Canada’s leading and most progressive voice for workers, UFCW Canada is proud to join our social justice and environmental allies in celebrating Earth Day on April 22, 2014.
Now in its 44th year, Earth Day is an opportunity to honour our beautiful planet and take action to protect it. From Auckland to Whitehorse, more than one billion people in communities around the world will be voicing their concerns for the planet and calling on political leaders to boldly work together in preserving the environment that we all share and love. This year's theme focuses on Green Cities and seeks to encourage smart investments in renewable energy, forward-thinking public policy, and an educated and active public in order to transform our cities into sustainable communities.
To commemorate this important day of international action, UFCW Canada is offering a new Earth Day image that Local Unions can display as a poster and share with members through social media networks like Facebook and Pinterest. Dubbed "Help The Earth," the new Earth Day image is now available in both French and English and can be downloaded at www.ufcw.ca/posters.
"Our union believes in building a world that is not only fair and equitable, but also sustainable," says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. "By standing with millions of individuals, organizations, and governments on Earth Day to acknowledge the planet that we call home, UFCW Canada is sending a message to our governments that responsible environmental stewardship is key to fostering a healthy and just society," Brother Meinema adds.
