New documentary launches on Have a Heart Day for First Nations children

New documentary launches on Have a Heart Day for First Nations childrenToronto – February 12, 2014 – UFCW Canada is proud to announce the premiere of a new film – Hi-Ho Mistahey! – produced by Alanis Obomsawin and the National Film Board of Canada. UFCW Canada contributed to the production of  the new documentary, which will be available free to view online from February 14-16. The documentary depicts the Shannen’s Dream campaign. The campaign continues the legacy of First nations youth activist Shannen Koostachin who launched a national call to have safe schools and equitable education for First Nations children. In advance of the February 14 premiere, you can watch the Hi-Ho Mistahey!trailer here.

The February 14th launch of the documentary coincides with the FNCFS's (First Nations Child and Family Caring Society) Have a Heart Day. This web-based initiative urges individuals to get involved on February 14th to spread the word, send a letter to their Member of Parliament, and support the call for First Nations children to have the same chance to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and proud of their culture.

UFCW Canada is a strong national partner with the First Nations Caring Society, which is the only national organization serving Aboriginal children and families in Canada. A formal mutual support agreement between UFCW Canada and FNCFS was signed in the spirit of solidarity in the fall of 2013. For further inquiries on this campaign, please contact Emmanuelle Lopez, National Representative of HRED at UFCW Canada.
