Winnipeg – September 22, 2013 – Hundreds of labour allies joined UFCW Canada Local 832 activists on the picket line to support striking Local 832 members at Vista Park Lodge in Winnipeg.
The members went on legal strike on September 14, after Extendicare — the company that owns Vista Park — failed to table a fair offer, and to remove concession demands that would allow Vista Park to contract out some of their jobs. The collective agreement expired on March 31, 2012. Since then, both sides have met on numerous occasions, and with the help of a conciliation officer, but the company has remained steadfast in its position.
Under Manitoba's Essential Services Act, many of the members are forced to work during the dispute. Undeterred, they have been picketing on their days off, and before and after their shifts.
