Chicago – Wednesday, August 14, 2013 – Day three of the 7th Regular UFCW International Convention offered delegates another full day of discussion, debate, and democratic decision making about building on the strength and boldness of the membership to create a higher standard of fairness, justice and equality for North America.

National President Wayne Hanley’s report to delegates about the union’s groundbreaking efforts in Canada – and the life-changing difference that UFCW Canada members and activists are making for working families across the country – was enthusiastically received by conventioneers, who welcomed his remarks with a standing ovation.

“The brothers and sisters of UFCW Canada understand that change for the better only happens when people stick together to achieve a common goal, and remain committed to getting it done, and taking bold steps in the face of adversity,” said Brother Hanley to the 2,500-plus delegates, alternates, observers and guests.

“We embrace solidarity because together we have witnessed the power of collective action, and we understand that labour rights and human rights are not a given, that justice must be gained, that fairness and equality must prevail,” added Brother Hanley
“Sisters and brothers, this is the union we must be, as we advance as Canada’s most dynamic, inclusive and determined voice for workers and their families. This is the bold union we are!”

Conventioneers also heard from Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, community organizer Sarita Gupta, and Congressman John Lewis who all spoke about the UFCW’s central role and leadership in challenging the reckless policies of ultra-conservative governments and socially irresponsible corporations.
