Chicago – August 12, 2013 – More than 2,500 UFCW delegates and activists from across North America, including the 300-member UFCW Canada caucus, were greeted by the resounding voices of Chicago’s world famous Trinity Church of Christ Choir as the UFCW 7th Regular Convention opened Monday at Chicago’s McCormick Center. Held every five years, the Regular Convention brings together UFCW leaders, activists, and delegates to shape the future of our great union.

The convention was officially called to order, under the banner theme: Blue. Gold. Bold. Powerful Together.

Following a resounding ovation for a video featuring UFCW members, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, a Democrat, then took the stage to welcome the assembly of UFCW activists, Local Unions and leaders to Chicago. Governor Quinn thanked UFCW for its community leadership and for protecting and advancing the rights of working people. Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky was also greeted with huge round of applause as she affirmed the need for Congress to make workers’ rights and job creation as absolute priorities to restore income equality and security for working families. Women’s Rights leader Lilly Ledbetter then fired up delegates with an outstanding speech about the need for greater equality.

“I am more optimistic than ever because I see workers and their allies coming together like they never did before.  Thank you for your efforts every day to defend and promote the rights of working people,” said Sister Ledbetter. “It makes a huge difference.”

Throughout the convention, UFCW Canada programs, resources, videos and publications will be featured at a UFCW Canada display area in the convention’s Unity Hall. UFCW Canada activists will also be presenting at a number of delegate education workshops throughout the week.
