Winnipeg – April 15, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 832's 75th Anniversary gathering brought together more than 500 members, activists, staff and officers to celebrate the historic landmark of Manitoba's largest private-sector union and leading voice for food, retail and commercial workers.

The celebratory evening kicked off with a welcome from Manitoba NDP Premier Greg Selinger, who commended Local 832 for "its tremendous contribution, today and throughout the past 75 years, to improving the lives of tens of thousands of Manitoba workers and their community."

The roots of Local 832 reach back to 1938, when some workers at a local Piggly Wiggly grocery decided to unionize. With their combined courage and commitment, the legacy of Local 832 was launched.

"On behalf of the UFCW Canada activists across the country, congratulations for making such a positive difference over the past 75 years," said National President Hanley to the anniversary gathering. "Local 832 has not only brought strength to the membership, and to our great union, but also to working families across Manitoba, by supporting a culture of inclusion, fairness, and equality."

The evening also included a warm welcome for Local 832 Past-President Bernard Christophe, and Local 832 Past-President Robert Ziegler, as they shared their personal memories as members, staff members, and ultimately presidents of UFCW Canada Local 832.

The evening was not only a celebration, but also a renewed commitment to serve the membership for decades to come. "All of us at Local 832 want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played a part in the success of our Local Union over the years, as well as those who continue to do so today," said UFCW Canada Local 832 President Jeff Traeger.

"The struggle for the rights of working people continues, and UFCW Canada Local 832 and our activists will continue to fight for those rights today, and every day that follows."
