Maintenance workers at Highline Mushrooms join union – UFCW 1518
Langley, B.C. – August 27, 2024 – More workers at the Highline Mushrooms Langley location have joined UFCW 1518, following the successful organizing victory at the Langley location last month.
19 workers in the maintenance division at Langley’s Highline Mushrooms farm have joined the union, joining the 400 agricultural workers as new union members at this location. While the agricultural workers are migrant workers in Canada on temporary work permits, the new members in the maintenance division are largely local to Langley.
The maintenance workers chose to join the union to obtain similar job security and benefits as their colleagues including, improved health and safety, collective bargaining, and more.
“We welcome our newest members to the UFCW 1518 family,” says Patrick Johnson, President of UFCW 1518. “The workers at Highline Mushrooms continue to make history as the largest group of workers to unionize in the agricultural sector in Canada, and we hope that they continue to serve as inspiration for others in the sector.”
In addition to Langley, workers at four Highline Mushrooms farms in Abbotsford joined UFCW 1518 in June.
UFCW Local 1518 represents more than 26,000 members working in the community health, hospitality, retail, cannabis, industrial, and professional sectors across British Columbia. To read more about UFCW 1518 and its outstanding work, visit the Local Union’s website.
