Wiikinahmahgeh Corner with Indigenous Subcommittee member Christine Holowka

Wiikinahmahgeh Corner with Indigenous Subcommittee member Christine Holowka

Prince George, B.C. – June 30, 2024 – For the close of Indigenous History Month, UFCW continues its video education series of Wiikinahmahgeh corner with UFCW 1518 member Christine Holowka.

Wiikinahmahgeh means Education in Anishnawbe. Members of UFCW Canada's Indigenous Subcommittee and other indigenous members are sharing their voices and stories in this ongoing series.

In the video below, Christine Holowka, who is an Indigenous Subcommittee and UFCW 1518 member, shares her stories of finding her Cree Métis roots, connecting with her heritage, the impact of residential school, and more stories. She concludes by singing a very old lullaby.

“My message to those who travel the same journey that I do is that we're all connected. […] We should celebrate and be proud who we are,” says Holowka. “We should honor who we are. We should honor our ancestors.”

“I am so grateful to the platform that my union, UFCW 1518, has given me, and that the National UFCW has given me because it’s allowed me to use my voice and talk this way, where before I never would have,” add Holowka. “I would encourage anybody else to do the same. Be proud of who you are. Be who you need to be. And know that the ancestors are watching us.”
