Ontario YIP session empowers young UFCW leaders
Niagara Falls, Ont. – June 3, 2024 – The latest session of the acclaimed UFCW Canada Young Workers Internship Program (YIP) recently took place in Niagara Falls, Ontario, bringing together dedicated UFCW Canada activists from across Ontario. Over the course of a week, participants engaged in dynamic training sessions aimed at fostering empowerment and advancing Canada’s labour movement.
YIP stands as a leading training and educational initiative on a national scale, attracting young UFCW Canada members from across the country eager to deepen their engagement within the union.
During the program, participants immersed themselves in various subjects, including labour history, gaining greater insights into Canada’s worker movement, and more. The week reached its pinnacle with an animated simulated bargaining session, where participants assumed the roles of both employer and union representatives to negotiate and reach a collective agreement.
"YIP has provided me with a lot of knowledge and insights about Canada's labour movement," says UFCW Local 175 member Harvinder Singh. "Young members are the future of our country, and programs such as YIP give us equip us with the tools not only to tackle workplace challenges but also to contribute meaningfully to addressing broader societal issues."
The 2024 Young-Workers Internship Program will continue its cross-country tour with stops in Manitoba, Alberta, and Quebec.
Since its inception in 2000, The UFCW Canada Young-Workers Internship Programhas served as a platform for connecting with young members on topics pertinent to both them and the broader labour movement. Stay updated with the program by following us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
