UFCW Canada stands in solidarity with National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak

Toronto – May 1, 2024 – UFCW Canada stands in solidarity with Assembly of First Nations’ National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak following a disturbing incident aboard a domestic flight in which she was forced to hand over a case containing her sacred headdress – echoing similar challenges faced by Indigenous UFCW Canada members.

The recent incident, where Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak was forced to store her sacred headdress in a plastic bag on cargo storage onboard a domestic flight highlights the urgent need for heightened awareness and respect for Indigenous cultural practices.

The incident mirrors similar struggles faced by UFCW Canada members and members of the UFCW Indigenous Sub-Committee, prompting the union to contact the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez urging for actions to be taken that prioritize the respectful handling of sacred items, ensuring that these disturbing incidences are never repeated.

“Our declaration of solidarity with Chief Nepinak sends a clear message that discrimination against Indigenous peoples, whether through overt actions or systemic neglect, must be swiftly called out and acted upon without exception,” says UFCW Canada National President Shawn Haggerty. “UFCW Canada is proud to stand alongside Chief Nepinak as an ally in demanding tangible measures to immediately address these injustices.”

UFCW Canada is committed to upholding the rights and dignity of Indigenous members and communities across Canada.
