UFCW Canada: The Union for Retail Workers

UFCW Canada represents thousands of members in the retail sector across the country, from the Yukon, and British Columbia to the shores of Newfoundland, and everywhere in between. Simply put, UFCW Canada is the retail workers union.

A strong union, like UFCW Canada, is essential in turning retail jobs into good, middle-class jobs with fair scheduling practices, higher wages, better benefits, and more.

Our union helps retail workers, and their families build a better life and that’s why more and more retail workers turn to UFCW Canada to gain the union advantage.

Facts About the Retail Industry in Canada

Canada’s retail market size was over $473 billion in 2022. The market is expected to continue to experience growth of more than 4% in years to come.

Across Canada, the current average wage for retail workers is $16.41 per hour.

Across all industries, unionized workers earn more than their non-union counterparts. In some cases, unionized workers earn upwards to $10 per hour more than non-unionized workers.

WHY RETAIL WORKERS JOIN THE UNION

Being a member of UFCW Canada, the union for retail workers, means you will have an experienced voice in the workplace who can advocate for your interests. It also means that you will be protected by a collective agreement that can provide you and your colleagues with things like higher wages and better workplace health and safety.

Choosing UFCW Canada: Retail Workers

A career in retail can be a fun, and rewarding job, especially if you work at a unionized retailer.

The unfortunate reality of the industry is that many non-union retailers do not offer health benefits, such as dental care and eye care coverage. In a non-union store, getting enough hours to provide for your family can be based on whether the manager likes you or not. Wages at non-union retailers also tend to be lower than those at unionized stores, and retirement benefits like a pension plan are extremely rare without a union in your corner.

UFCW Canada members working in the retail sector enjoy the flexibility to live their life with schedules that are based on members’ length of service and availability. When you’re a member of a union, your collective agreement protects you when you need leave or time off.

UFCW Canada continues to fight against cruel practices like “on call” scheduling that provide little to no stability and no advance warnings of schedules.

The clear advantages of being in a union are why more and more retail workers are choosing UFCW Canada as their union. With decades of experience representing thousands of retail workers from coast to coast, UFCW Canada is the nation’s retail union.

We are the preferred union of choice for workers in the retail sector because we have a demonstrated track record of helping retail workers stand up for their rights and build a better life at work.
