Building a Better Future in 2024
Toronto – December 20, 2023 – With the holiday season upon us, and a new year awaiting, now is an appropriate time to reflect on the victories that UFCW activists achieved together this past year, while looking ahead to the challenges that await in 2024 and beyond.
In 2023, our UFCW Canada family continued to advance in solidarity, with major organizing victories in our core sectors, including growth in retail and cannabis sectors. As our union family went to the bargaining table over the course of the year, we saw many victories, including some of the highest wage increases in a generation in the food retail sector thanks strike mandate votes.
2023 saw legislative victories on key priorities, including Federal Anti-Scab legislation, expansion of the Agri-Food Pilot, the passing of the Canadian Disability Benefit, and more. In British Columbia, the government passed legislation protecting app workers. We will continue to advocate for a better future for all Canadian workers in 2024 and beyond.
UFCW activists continued to fight for issues that matter to Canadian workers: from combating racism and hate, to better protection for migrant food workers, affordable housing, pay transparency, and more. As we face a 2024 filled with soaring costs of living and continued uncertainty, it is crucial that we continue to rally together to continue to organize around issues of economic security, fair wages and a better future.
UFCW Canada wishes you and your family a safe and happy holiday season, and a prosperous and healthy New Year!
