Toronto – October 25, 2023 – Workers at Mountain Equipment Company Toronto location voted yesterday to join UFCW Local 1006A. This store will be the third unionized location in Canada after locations in Vancouver and Victoria joined UFCW 1518.
On Sunday, current and former workers, friends and family gathered outside the store to show their support of the unionization efforts.
“I support the union at MEC because we deserve to have access to fair working conditions and fair wages for the work that we do,” says Skyler Dawson, a former MEC employee. “And we deserve to be able to afford things like groceries and rent and have a good quality of life.”
“[Being part of a union] will force management to come to the negotiating table and they'll give us a fair deal, a fairer deal than what we have right now,” said Calum Houston, a current MEC employee.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow joined the rally to show her support for the workers. Mayor Chow took the time to speak with every worker at the rally and encourage their union efforts.
Workers at MEC Toronto voted to join the union over concerns about job security, fair wages, a lack of workplace transparency, and more. You can learn more about UFCW as the union for Mountain Equipment Company workers at ufcw.ca/mec.
