Toronto – March 25, 2013 – Canada’s leading union, UFCW Canada, joined over 1,000 allies and activists from the labour and social justice movement to fully participate in the first-ever CLC political action conference.

Held in Toronto from March 22 to 24, the conference – called Stand Up for Fairness – involved UFCW Canada activists from every region of the country who focused on new ways to expose the harmful effects of the Conservative agenda, and to mobilize coworkers, friends, neighbours, and family members to elect governments that put working families first.

“The need to unite as a movement, and to inspire all workers in joining the public cause for greater fairness, is greater than ever,” said UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley in addressing the jam-packed hall of union activists and leaders.

“Together, we achieved the social protections that Canadians value most – like universal healthcare, accessible education, a public pension plan, and more fairness in the workplace,” added Brother Hanley. “And together we will stop Conservative politicians like Stephen Harper, Brad Wall and Tim Hudak from taking away those essential Canadian values our parents and grandparents fought for, and those values our children need to succeed.”

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair echoed President Hanley’s remarks on Saturday when he outlined Stephen Harper’s attack on working families, and reaffirmed the NDP’s strong commitment to advancing fairness for workers and their communities.

Throughout the conference, hundreds of delegates gathered at the UFCW Canada information booth to discuss the union’s groundbreaking efforts and campaigns, and to send a letter to their senators telling them to stop Bill C-377.
