Solidarity with Indonesian workers fighting precarious employment
Toronto – January 31, 2023 – UFCW Canada stands in solidarity with IUF affiliate FSBMM union in their fight against precarious work at Philips Seafood in Lampung, Indonesia.
Over 40 women lost regular employment with Philips Seafood when they requested permanent jobs after nearly 20 years of causal and daily contract work. To justify their actions the company deemed their job performance as “poor” and that they needed to improve their “speed” all the while stopping mandatory contributions to their government healthcare.
In solidarity with the terminated workers, FSBMM activists launched protest actions at Phillips Seafood Indonesia head office and factory in Pasuruan, East Java, demanding their reinstatement and conversion to permanent employment. The union is also calling on the CEO to personally intervene.
