Halifax – July 20, 2022 – Activists from the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) joined tens of thousands of participants from across the region for the 35th Annual Halifax Pride Parade, held on July 16. The parade was the first in-person march since 2019 and served as the centerpiece of the 11-day Halifax Pride Festival, which celebrates the LGBTQI2S community throughout Nova Scotia.
The parade set out from Ahern Avenue, heading through downtown Halifax and ending at the Garrison Grounds Festival Site. It is estimated that over 30,000 people joined in this year’s colourful event, celebrating equity and inclusion with fellow Haligonians and participants from abroad.
At the parade, dozens of UFCW EPC activists marched alongside their brightly decorated float while handing out UFCW tote bags to spectators.
“Pride is all about celebrating and embracing the LGBTQI2S community and demonstrating to UFCW members that our union welcomes everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity,” says Mark Dobson, president of the UFCW Eastern Provinces Council. “I want to thank all of the activists who came out for this year’s Pride Parade – it was great to finally be able to march in-person again, and it seems like everyone involved had a lot of fun.”
As Canada's most progressive union, UFCW Canada plays a leading role in advocating for full equality and opportunity for the LGBTQI2S community. To learn more about UFCW’s LGBTQI2S initiatives, visit www.ufcw.ca/pride.
