Retail members at Indigo secure first contract – UFCW 1006A
Toronto – May 26, 2022 – UFCW 1006A members at two Indigo locations in Toronto recently secured a first collective agreement that provides important first contract language to build on in future bargaining.
“We are proud of the work our union negotiators did in achieving a fair union contract for workers at Indigo Yorkdale and Indigo Scarborough,” says UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “Together, we are establishing a strong foundation to build on for the future.”
The contract comes after successful organizing campaigns brought the two locations into the local union’s membership in the summer and fall of 2021. These members join forces with several Indigo locations to have gone union in a retail organizing wave that swept across Ontario and B.C. throughout the pandemic.
In the new contract members achieved important scheduling, minimum wage protection and health and safety language they were looking to secure with unionization.
“It is simply a testament to the fact that unionizing is not a ‘one-and-done’ situation, it is an ongoing battle,” says UFCW 1006A negotiating committee member Greta Whipple. “But we’re pushing back and looking forward to collaborating with our representatives to improve the working conditions at Indigo and exercise our right to have a fair say in the terms of our employment.”
